Stephanie J. Woods is a multimedia artist working in photography, sculpture, and video. Her mixed media works explore multilayered concepts. Such as, what are the cognitive effects of cultural assimilation? And how does conformity commodify the body? These works are accomplished through the use of materials that have become symbolic media referencing mundane private moments, and black American culture. Woods holds an MFA from the University of North Carolina, at Greensboro and is currently a 2018 – 2019 Fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts. She served as an educator at Virginia Commonwealth University in the Arts Foundation Program, 2017 – 2018 and has attended several residencies including ACRE Residency, McColl Center for Art + Innovation, Oxbow School of Art and Artists’ Residency, and Penland School of Crafts. Her work was notably recognized by the 2017 South Arts Fellowship, and the 2016-2017 N.C. Arts Council Fellowship.

Poetic Response: Stephanie Woods’ Art Challenges Racial Perception and Performance

http://bostonartreview.com/reviews/stephanie-woods-lavender-notes-provincetown/ “This exhibition review provides a conversation between the art of Stephanie J. Woods and the poetry of collaborator, Laura Neal. It is, in essence, an ekphrastic piece. Laura Neal wrote the featured poem, “We Are the Ones,” in response to an ongoing project by artist Stephanie J. Woods, titled, “Relax. Relate. Release.”(RRR). In this review, subjectivity and objectivity generate two distinctive voices that challenges duplicity and multiplicity, working to erase the line between truth and contradiction. This collaboration speaks to the impossible labor of transparency.”
