SCHOLARSHIPS

ACRE is a predominantly volunteer-run non-profit. We use additional sources of funding to offer the residency program at below cost. Please only apply for a financial aid scholarship if absolutely needed.

Financial aid is not guaranteed.

General Scholarship

  • A limited number of general scholarships are available each year.
  • Awarded based on both merit as determined by our admissions process and financial need as determined by an admissions committee review of financial need statements.
  • The financial aid section on the application must be completed for consideration of a general scholarship.

 

2018 Special Scholarship Opportunities

Diversity Scholarship

  • ACRE strives to create an inclusive environment, welcoming and celebrating all media of art production with a focus in interdisciplinary collaboration as well as fostering the involvement of underrepresented communities at the residency. This scholarship was established to support heterogeneity on all fronts at the residency and throughout our programming in the Chicago area. We believe that providing an opportunity for artists underrepresented at the residency to attend ACRE free of charge will reinforce our goal of providing support to young and emerging artists in an inclusive and welcoming environment.

    To qualify for a Diversity Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Apply to the ACRE Residency Program by program deadline.
    • Indicate eligibility for the Diversity Scholarship and complete the financial aid section on the ACRE application form.
    • Individual artists as well as 2 and 3 person collaborative projects are eligible to receive this scholarship.

 

Southeastern US Equity Scholarship

  • The newly established Equity Scholarship will enable artists of color residing in the Southeastern United States to attend the ACRE Residency free of charge. This includes food and lodging for the two-week residency period, as well as access to the myriad facilities and artist community enjoyed by ACRE Residents. Additionally, this scholarship includes a travel stipend of $300. A branch of ACRE’s Diversity Scholarship Fund, the Equity Scholarship supports our goal to engage partnerships that will support heterogeneity on all fronts at the residency and throughout our programming in the Chicago area.

    To qualify for the Equity Scholarship, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

    • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Apply to the ACRE Residency Program by program deadline.
    • Must be an artist of color residing in the Southeastern United States.*
    • Indicate eligibility for the Equity Scholarship and complete the financial aid section on the ACRE application form..
    • Individual artists are eligible to receive this scholarship.
* For the intent of this scholarship, “Southeastern United States” includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.

 

Brenda Green Gender Inclusivity Scholarship 

  • The Brenda Green Gender Inclusivity (BGGI) Scholarship will enable artists who do not identify with their assigned gender at birth to attend the ACRE Residency free of charge. This includes food and lodging for the two-week residency period, as well as access to the myriad facilities and artist community enjoyed by ACRE Residents. A branch of ACRE’s Diversity Scholarship Fund, the BGGI Scholarship supports our goal to engage partnerships that will support heterogeneity on all fronts at the residency and throughout our programming in the Chicago area. Preference may be given to artists whose work addresses their or other gender identities.

    To qualify for the Brenda Green Gender Inclusivity Scholarship, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

    • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Apply to the ACRE Residency Program by program deadline.
    • Must be an artist who does not identify with their assigned gender at birth.*
    • Indicate eligibility for the Brenda Green Gender Inclusivity Scholarship and complete the financial aid section on the ACRE application form.
    • Individual artists are eligible to receive this scholarship.
* For the intent of this scholarship, “artists who do not identify with their assigned gender at birth” are defined as including artists who identify as transgender, non-binary, gender non-conforming, gender fluid, gender queer, gender variant, intersex, agender, bigender or third gender.

 

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago Alumni Scholarship

  • ACRE has partnered with The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) to create a scholarship opportunity to accepted residents who are also Master’s level graduates from SAIC. We are excited to work with SAIC to further support the careers of their alumni and provide free services to their artists. Eligibility for the SAIC Alumni Scholarship will be based on successful completion of an SAIC Graduate Program within 12 months of the start date of the summer residency (July 2018). Both traditional and Low Residency MFA candidates are eligible..
    To qualify for a School of the Art Institute of Chicago Alumni Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Apply to the ACRE Residency Program by program deadline.
    • Must have completed an SAIC Graduate Program between July 2017-July 2018.
    • Indicate eligibility for the SAIC Alumni Scholarship and complete the financial aid section on the ACRE application form.
    • Individual artists are eligible to receive this scholarship.

Marwen Alumni Scholarship

  • ACRE has partnered with Marwen to create a scholarship opportunity for accepted residents who are also alumni of Marwen’s program. We are honored to take part in Marwen’s illustrious 29-year history of providing free visual arts classes to underserved Chicago youth by hosting the recipient of the Marwen Alumni Scholarship at the ACRE Residency. ACRE’s two-tiered programming structure supports emerging artists through its residency program in rural Wisconsin, and subsequently provides all residents with exhibition opportunities in Chicago during the year.

    To qualify for a Marwen Alumni Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Apply to the ACRE Residency Program by program deadline.
    • Must be a Marwen Alumnus.
    • Indicate eligibility for Marwen Scholarship and complete the financial aid section on the ACRE application form.
    • Recipients will be encouraged to share their ACRE residency experience with the Marwen community.
    • Individual artists are eligible to receive this scholarship.
    advocacy-marwen Marwen has been educating and inspires underserved young people through the visual arts since 1987. Each year Marwen provides free visual arts courses, college planning and career development programs to more than 800 of Chicago’s underserved 6th-12th grade students from throughout the city.

Virginia Aberle Memorial Scholarship

  • This scholarship was established with the intent to celebrate the life and honor the memory of our dear volunteer, alumni, friend and collaborator, Virginia Anne Aberle. A pillar of the ACRE community, Virginia wholly embodied the values of collaboration and mutual support that we strive toward as an organization. Virginia’s Memorial Scholarship will provide the opportunity for an artist working with an expansive, community based practice to attend the residency program free of charge.

    To qualify for a Virginia Aberle Memorial Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Apply to the ACRE Residency Program by program deadline.
    • Must be an artist whose practice utilizes or engages with community.
    • Indicate eligibility for the Virginia Aberle Memorial Scholarship and complete the financial aid section on the ACRE application form.
    • Individual artists are eligible to receive this scholarship.
